Resettlement of Majhimushahar Community
Majhimushahar Community is the isolated settlements of Mushahar caste within the city area of Ratnanagar Municipality ward no 5. Earlier, the community was resided at the bank of the Rapti River. The flooding in Rapti River in 1994 had swept away their entire settlement leaving nothing behind and they had to start their life from the very beginning. The families then migrated to the present location in 1994 and restart their life.
With the project intervention of Lumanti in Ratnanagar city in the year 2011, various community level programs like organizing people, community mobilization and capacity enhancement programs was initiated which has resulted some significant change in the mindset of the people observed. The people of the Majhimushar community were capacitated, the community groups, women groups and youth were strengthened through various level of trainings and exposure visits. Gradually, the community people realized their capacity within themselves and started developing access to the local governing bodies and development stakeholders for the necessary infrastructure development in their community.
Along with other infrastructures like communal toilets and drainage community building was constructed with support from Lumanti and Municipality. Access to road from the community was improved. And with the strong advocacy and lobby from the community, the local water service provider has extended the drinking water pipeline in the community. Lumanti in coordination with community federation together with community members are actively involved in community upgrading since the project intervention in Ratnanagar.
After the exposure visit in different communities where Lumanti has been working, the people of Majhimushahar community, influenced with the Laurighol Housing, thought for the resettlement of their community and approached Lumanti Support Group for Shelter through local community federation. After series of meeting with the community, community resettlement plan was developed in active participation of the people in the community. Series of discussion and meetings have been organized with the community people on various issues and problems assessing the needs to improve their housing condition.
With support from technical team from Lumanti, every households in the Majhimushahar community have then developed their housing structure and community resettlement plan. 22 families in the communities constructed their house through loan support from Urban Poor Support Fund. Each family receives Nepalese rupees two hundred thousand with interest rate of 6 percent per annum. They need to repay back the loan within 5 years. Remaining 2 families constructed thier house inventing their own saving. Total of 24 families have completed the construction of their house. All the technical support for the construction of the house have been provided by Lumanti.
