
A virtual discussion on 'Safe Housing : What? Where? How?'
Marking the SDG Action Week, Lumanti Support Group for Shelter in collaboration with NGO Federation, Community Women Forum, Nepal Basobas Basti Samrakshyan Samaaj and Nepal Mahila Ekata Samaaj organized a virtual discussion on 'Safe Housing : What? Where? How?' on 24th September 2020. The webinar was aimed to develop a common understanding on safe housing and to share the process towards achieving safe housing. It was also intended to identify ways to achieve safe housing - How can we own a safe house and how can we make our communities a safer place to live.
More than 75 participants including community leaders, youth leaders and women leaders from different districts representing the district chapter of National Federation of Informal Settlements (Nepal Basobas Basti Samrakshyan Samaaj), Nepal Mahila Ekata Samaaj along with representatives from Community Women Forum, Community led Women Cooperatives from different cities have actively attended the webinar. Others particitpated in the seminar were the representatives from DUDBC, UN Habitat, IOE and other stakeholders.
During the webinar, the leaders from different leaders highlighted the activities and initiatives that they have been doing for securing their tenure. They have also shared about the problems the community have been facing due to the lockdown situation followed by coronavirus infection. The community leaders have also raised their voice against the threat of forced eviction that they have been experiencing. They have also talked about the social discrimination and negative perception of the society towards the informal settlers.
On the occasion, Field Coordinator of Lumanti in Ratnanagar Singha Bahadur Lama presented his paper covering approaches, practices and the initiatives like Urban Community Support Fund, Community Led Housing Program and Digitization of the status of informal settlements that Lumanti has under taken for securing and improving the housing condition of the communities.
