Building Temporary Shelter
So far, people who have lost their houses have been using tents and tarpaulins as emergency shelter. It's not easy to live under the tarpaulins for a long period of time. Therefore, Lumanti aims to support in building temporary shelter that is durable at least for 1 – 2 years, for people who have become shelter less so they are slightly more comfortable, safer & secured. According to the data provided by the Thankot community, about 1200 families have been affected by the earthquake. But the people who are vulnerable and need urgent support would be about 400 families. It is not possible to give all the families immediate support but understanding was made to start building 10 houses to start with, so at least 10 families get immediate shelter.
The Thankot community agreed to do a data collection and categorize people in different groups according to the support they need. People who are highly vulnerable will be given top priority so the first phase would consist of people who are in desperate need of immediate shelter. They could be old people, women headed families, people without any alternatives for temporary shelter. The categorization would be done systematically so it is fair to all the affected people and no conflict is caused, because at the end of the day everybody wants a secured shelter. Lumanti also agreed to help families to repair damaged
houses so people can go back and live there. Lumanti also informed the community to co-ordinate with the municipality so they become aware of the community led activities in meeting the immediate shelter needs.
The plus point about Thankot is many families have their own small vacant piece of land and they only need support to build their houses. And for people without any private land, public vacant land will be identified to build temporary shelter.
