Housing in Materia community in Kalaiya

The housing program in Materia was initiated by Lumanti in collaboration with Kalaiya Sub-metropolitan City, Abbe Pierre Foundation and ward 22 office of Kalaiya. The first stone laying ceremony of the housing program was carried out on 25th March 2022.

Through the project a total of 33 families of the Materia communities were provided support for the construction of their houses. Each family received grant worth NRs. 180,000.00 from Lumanti/Abbe Pierre Foundation. The ward committee has also contributed 15,00,000.00 for beneficiary households to implement the housing program in the community.

The houses in the Materia community are constructed using CSEB inter-locking bricks with CGI sheet on the roof and the technically treated bamboo for false ceiling. During the construction period, the community people were also provided technical training for treating bamboo and making the truss for the ceiling mobilizing technical person from Green Bamboo Creation. After the training, the community people (30 men and 2 women from the community) were provided job for roofing the houses.

Materia is the Dalit community, with total of 33 families, located in ward no. 22 in Kalaiya city. The community has occupied 61965 square feet of land. The community is quite far from the city center and is deprived of the city services. Almost all the houses in the community were temporarily structured with thatched or tiled roofs. The families in the community depend upon the daily waged jobs and some of them are engaged in animal husbandry.
