Since 2005, Lumanti has been working to improve the living conditions and socio-economic status of urban poor and informal settlement communities in Nepal. Guided by the People-Led Development Process (PLDP), the project positions communities as key drivers of change, with Lumanti acting as a facilitator to strengthen local capacity, promote inclusion, and connect communities with municipal services and resources.
The project focuses on organizing and empowering communities, strengthening coordination with local governments and national federations, and advancing advocacy for housing and land rights. Key interventions include community capacity building, women’s economic empowerment through savings and cooperatives, engagement of children and youth, school infrastructure and education support, housing improvement for poor and marginalized families, and WASH infrastructure and awareness programs.
Innovative mechanisms such as Urban Community Support Funds, Community Action Plans, and Community Information Centers were established to ensure sustainable access to finance, infrastructure development, and public services. Through collective planning, partnership, and community leadership, the project contributes to building more inclusive, resilient, and dignified cities where marginalized urban communities can thrive.
