A program was organized in memory of Late Parveen Rehman, a leading Social Worker on 21st March 2013 in Kathmandu, Nepal.
During the Memorial Service organized by Lumanti Support Group for Shelter, a spiritual prayer from the monks and the lamp lightening was done praying for the departed soul. A minute long silence was also performed in memory of the late Parveen Rahmen.
Speaking on the program, Development Commissioner of Kathmandu Valley Development Authority Keshav Sthapit said, assassination of a social worker like Parveen is a cruel act and is the biggest lost for all. This lost should now be internalized as a revolution against those evil acts.
Recalling the memory of Late Parveen, President of Lumanti Support Group for Shelter Prafulla Man Singh Pradhan said, Parveen was an Architect by profession and had a better option to live her life in prosperity but she chose to be the helper of the poor. There are many thing as such of her from which we can get inspired.
Executive Director of Lumanti Lajana Manandhar said, its very hard for me to accept her absence in my life. Her dedication towards helping the poor has always inspired me towards my work. Lighting candles and a minute long silence in memory of Parveen is a tribute to her but the real tribute for her is to give continuity to the path she had shown.
Another speaker in the gathering President of Nepal Mahila Ekata Samaj Bimala Lama said, it’s a high time the helper of the poor be vigilant regarding their security. She was selfless worker and it’s her initiation that we can even see in Nepal, the poverty mapping program being conducted in the riverbank settlements. She further said, according to Parveen, to be poor is not a crime and its no one else but we who have to fight for ourselves. But it’s not the end rather its an start of the other similar voices, she added.
Speaking about Late Parveen devotion for the work Regional Advocacy Manager of Water Aid Nepal Mustafa stressed the need of commitments from all to give the continuity of work for the poor.
Oliver John representative from WSSCC talking about Parveen's devotion to support poor said, we must appreciate her for her deeds. She was very dedicated and passionate human and believes in community based approach. It will be best tribute to her, to continue the work she started, he stated.
Parveen Rehman was a selfless social worker of Pakistan who had turned her back on a lucrative career in architecture to work in Orangi where she managed the housing and sanitation programmes. For thousands of people, who visited her at the Orangi Pilot Project, she was their only hope. They came to her to solve their problems, to give them encouragement, and show the way. She was also a fighter. She fought for the rights of the people, for the betterment of the city and the nation. On March 13, 2013, on her way to home from the office, her car was intercepted in the middle of the road by masked gunmen on motor cycle. Gunshots were fired at the car. Her driver rushed her to the hospital but she could not be saved. And her only crime was her selfless work for the poor!!!!
